DP World
The corporate integration between Dubai Ports Authority and DPI Terminals led to the creation of DP World in September 2005. It is now the 4th largest port & terminal operators in the world, with a portfolio of 44 terminals and 13 new developments in 28 countries, including the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, and Latin America. DP World is headquartered in Dubai, UAE.
DP World manages the port of Djibouti since the year 2000 and the international Airport of Djibouti since 2002. DP World with Jafza remains one of the pioneers of Dubai investment in Djibouti.
Doraleh Container Terminal
The construction of the Container Terminal has started on November 2006 and was inaugurated the 7th February 2009. The investment cost of the Container Terminal will be around USD 300 million. The Container Terminal will have a quay length of 1050m, 18m water depth in the first phase, which will be expanded to 2000m in the second phase. The Container Terminal capacity will be 1.7million TEUs in the first phase which will be expanded to 3 million TEUs in the second phase.
Advantages
Local boxes :
• Larger vessels calling at Doraleh will allow more local boxes to be shipped directly to Djibouti (without transshipment), which will likely reduce ocean freight costs.
• Larger revenue base will allow Doraleh port to reduce handling fees on local boxes.
Transit containers :
• Larger vessels and more frequent direct calls result in lower ocean freight costs.
• Reduced terminal handling rates possible due to larger revenue base.
• Doraleh will offer sufficient long-term capacity for all transit traffic.
Transhipment boxes:
• Existing Djibouti Port traffic figures have proven that Djibouti has significant potential to attract transshipment traffic.
• Doraleh Port would be highly competitive in terms of facilities (water deepth, quay length, etc…) and location with other Red Sea / Indian Ocean terminals.
• Doraleh Port would be the most modern Terminal in East Coast of the African continent, allowing it to develop as the natural trade hub of the region.
